The Bumper (Bumper, Front Spoiler, Rear Spoiler)

"Bumper" is the colloquially most commonly used term for the component that has been used at the front and rear of a vehicle since the early years of automotive construction for protection against collisions. Common (automotive) terms today also include "bumper" or "front spoiler" and "rear spoiler" (see below).

In the early years of automotive construction, simple round steel bars were attached to the front and rear to protect the body in case of impact. These bars were thus "bumpers". Initially available only as accessories, these useful components soon became standard equipment for cars. Soon, these actual bumpers became flatter and higher; instead of nickel-plating and painting the steel, the trend shifted to chrome-plating these "flat bars".

The early bumpers were rigidly connected to the body. The energy of a (more forceful) impact was directly transferred to the body, causing damage; it deformed, and often increased the risk of injury to the occupants and potential collision partners. The simple yet effective solution to this problem was to install shock absorbers between the body and the bumper. In the event of a light collision with an obstacle, these could absorb the kinetic energy - the bumper became the "bumper". Naturally, continuous work and development were done on the appearance and structure of bumpers to improve functionality and safety.

Since the 1990s, when people refer to a bumper, they also speak of the "spoiler," front or rear spoiler. The bumper has since been increasingly surrounded by a plastic shell, namely the spoiler. This is integrated into the vehicle design and is often a defining feature of a car model. In addition to the bumper, this component may include additional technology, such as proximity sensors and various additional lights (fog lights, cornering lights). Due to its shape, the spoiler can have a positive impact on the aerodynamics of a car - it can be equipped with ventilation slots and the functionality of a spoiler. In the early years, front and rear spoilers were made of sheet steel and painted, making them, due to the strong external stress in the wheel spray area, the most susceptible to rust among many car models.
