The Exterior Mirror

Exterior mirrors are often also referred to as side mirrors. Since the 1940s, exterior mirrors have been part of the standard equipment of motor vehicles. In the past, an exterior mirror on the driver's side was common, but since the 1970s, cars are typically equipped with two exterior mirrors. These protrude outward on the right and left, defining the vehicle's maximum width.

Normally, exterior mirrors easily last an entire car's lifespan—they don't wear out and are maintenance-free. However, due to their exposed position, they are often victims of vandalism or are damaged in a collision with another vehicle. It's often enough to collide slowly with the exterior mirror of another vehicle to destroy it, even though exterior mirrors are now designed to be foldable.

According to the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO), two mirrors for rearview are generally required for passenger cars—the left exterior mirror (on the driver's side) and the interior mirror. Driving with a missing left exterior mirror is not allowed. It must be replaced or repaired. The right exterior mirror is (strictly speaking) only required if the view to the rear through the interior mirror is not possible—though it undeniably contributes to an expanded field of view and, consequently, increased safety.
