The Master Cylinder

Since the 1920s, motor vehicles have been equipped with hydraulic master cylinders. The master cylinder transfers the pressure exerted by the driver on the brake pedal to the brake fluid in the brake lines of the two brake circuits. It converts mechanical pressure into hydraulic pressure and distributes it.

Without brakes, a vehicle does not function. Brake operations are a "natural part" of driving and are therefore not particularly noticed unless an unexpected event occurs:

  • the brake pedal travel becomes longer
  • one has to "pump" to achieve braking effect
  • the braking effect - deceleration of the car - decreases

These symptoms should not be taken lightly - an immediate troubleshooting is advisable. One of the possible causes in this case could be the master cylinder - along with other components of the brake system.
