The Clutch

The clutch is the link between the engine and the gearbox. With the help of the clutch, this connection can be disengaged (by pressing the clutch pedal) and re-engaged (by releasing the clutch pedal). This enables starting the vehicle and changing gears.

If the clutch pedal is not pressed, a diaphragm spring presses the clutch plate over the pressure plate against the flywheel within the clutch. Thus, a force-fitted connection is established, and the engine torque can be transmitted to the gearbox. When the clutch pedal is pressed, the pressure plate is lifted against the spring force, separating the connection, and no engine torque is transferred to the gearbox.

As the clutch plate wears over time, the pedal force required to operate the clutch increases. If a clutch is no longer in good condition and slips, this is usually noticeable during a drive in the highest gear under load. The engine revs higher, but the speed does not increase. If gears can only be engaged with difficulty and scraping noises occur, the clutch is not disengaging properly. Sometimes, readjusting the clutch play may be sufficient to remedy these symptoms. If that does not work, usually the diaphragm spring of the release bearing in the clutch is faulty or worn. In this case, the corresponding clutch parts need to be replaced.
