The V-Belt

The V-belt is a drive belt made of rubber with a textile or steel cord reinforcement.
V-belts are designed to transmit motion from one rotating pulley to another. They have a trapezoidal cross-section, and the V-belt pulleys they connect have a V-shaped groove. This increases the contact area of the V-belt on the pulleys, allowing for the transmission of greater torques (rotational forces) from one pulley to another compared to a flat belt. Due to this increased friction, V-belts can be dimensioned smaller, and the forces on the bearings of the driven pulleys are lower.

In vehicles, the V-belt transfers the rotational motion of the engine to various components, such as an alternator, a hydraulic pump for power steering, a water pump, an air conditioning compressor, and various fans. Since some of these additional components are essential for the engine's operation - no electricity without an alternator, no cooling without a water pump - using a vehicle without a V-belt or with a defective V-belt is not advisable. Therefore, if a V-belt is no longer functioning correctly, it needs to be replaced.

V-belts are largely standardized, allowing them to be used and replaced without regard to the manufacturer.
