The Starter / Ignition Starter

In the past, this component was referred to as the Starter, which is still colloquially common today. Nowadays, the Starter is mostly referred to as the Ignition Starter.

As opposed to steam engines or electric motors, internal combustion engines cannot start from a standstill without assistance. They need help—ignition assistance—to start. To initiate the work of an internal combustion engine, its pistons in the cylinders must be set in motion so they can intake and compress fuel. Today, this motion is initiated by a small electric motor called the Starter or Ignition Starter.

In the early days of automotive history—up until the 1920s—the necessary impulse for starting the engines was given mechanically, through manual effort. We're all familiar with the scenes from old movies where cars were started with a hand crank. The Starter / Ignition Starter is powered by the battery and is initiated by turning the ignition key or pressing a start button. Its rotational movement is transmitted to a large gear, the flywheel of the engine, through a single-track gear and a small gear, the pinion. This initiates the intake and compression strokes in the engine, and after the initial successful ignitions, the internal combustion engine begins its work, and the Starter / Ignition Starter is no longer needed.

The most common cause of a malfunctioning Starter / Ignition Starter is worn-out carbon brushes that wear out over time. A defective magnetic switch or a discharged battery can also prevent the engine from starting. The Starter / Ignition Starter is subjected to high demands, as it must reliably function during regular cold starts and in the most adverse outside temperatures. Generally, the Starter has a long life expectancy and rarely needs to be replaced due to a defect. If the Starter / Ignition Starter does need to be replaced, it is usually easily doable. In many vehicles, the Starter / Ignition Starter is easily accessible and can be quickly replaced with a new one.

If the Starter cannot be activated via the ignition due to a lack of power, in most cars, it is possible to start them by pushing or towing: Move the car with the ignition on and no gear engaged, put it in second or third gear, and engage the clutch. This transfers the kinetic energy of the vehicle through the wheels and the transmission to the engine, causing it to turn and start (hopefully).
