The Piston

The piston is a movable part of the combustion chamber that rapidly transforms the combustion energy obtained from the fuel into mechanical work explosively within the cylinder.

The piston is cylindrical and consists of a piston crown with piston rings, piston bosses, and a skirt. During operation, it moves up and down in the cylinder, forming the so-called piston force together with the forces generated by gas pressure. This force is transmitted to the connecting rod and crankshaft through the piston boss and piston pin. The piston rings, in turn, dissipate the heat generated during combustion, seal the combustion chamber, and scrape oil from the cylinder walls to control oil consumption.
