The Alternator

The alternator is a component in vehicles with an internal combustion engine that generates electricity, functioning much like a dynamo. Therefore, the alternator is often referred to as a generator. In some countries, the term "alternator" is commonly used for the alternator.

The name "alternator" is historically derived because, in the early days of motorized vehicles, its primary purpose was to supply power to the headlights. At that time, the engine was typically started using a hand crank.
The alternator is driven by the running engine, usually connected to it by a V-belt or a serpentine belt. In some vehicles, the alternator is directly coupled to the crankshaft - in such cases, it often takes on the additional function of the starter and is called a starter-generator.
