Buyer's Guide: Body parts

Like every vehicle, the classic Fiat 500 has it's own typical weaknesses, especially as regards the body. As with other cars featuring a unitized (=monocoque) body, damage can only be remedied with extensive refurbishment.

This means: before purchasing, take the time for an extensive body check!

Especially the following should be examined for corrosion:

Front panel

Lip / fold between front panel and trunk dish

Windscreen frame

The corners at the bottom right and bottom left of the windscreen frame, starting from under the windscreen rubber.

All inner wheel archs especially in the splash zones

Front suspension

All panels around the front suspension: above the leaf spring; around the transverse linkage

Bottom door surface, inner and outer bottom edge of door. Size of the door gap.

Floor panels below and above (after removing carpets & mats, especially at the front) don't forget the crossbars and seat rails

Pedal panel

Pedal kick panel should not be rusty, if the paint is coming off or traces of repair are found, be especially careful! These panels are where the swivel bearing block swivel bearing block and steering box are mounted.

Outer body

Outer body: examine for hidden rust and filler spots (very common!), wheel archs; door skins, door steps, panels below the tail-lights, front panel, cross rails.

Sun roof

Examine the sun-roof for ruptures. Sun roof frame - Corrosion is present mostly when the frame front / top can feel for lumps or irregularities.

A-, B- and C-pillar

A-, B- and C-pillar (possible side damage); A-pillar around door mount; C-pillar at the crossing point of the rear side panels to the roof (possible rear end or side damage, possibly poor repair work)
