The Windshield / Front Windshield

The first automobiles were built without glass windows. Drivers and passengers sat unprotected in the vehicles and often wore so-called aviator goggles to protect themselves from insects, rain, or dust. Then, a simple, flat glass pane was mounted in front of the occupants, providing better protection against weather and airborne particles. However, in the event of an accident or breakage, it could cause serious injuries. That's why vehicle windows are now made of safety glass.

Two types of glass are used for vehicle windows today:

Laminated Safety Glass (LSG), which shatters into many small pieces when broken. While these fragments still have sharp edges, they are too small to cause deep injuries. LSG is mainly used for side windows and rear windows.
Windshields or front windshields are now made of Tempered Safety Glass (TSG). In these windshields or front windshields, a film is sandwiched between two glass panes. As a result, a windshield or front windshield does not break into loose glass splinters in the event of a fracture, leading to increased safety for vehicle occupants.

In modern cars, the windshield or front windshield has also become a design object, on which vehicle designers like to exert influence to give models a unique look. Windshields also contribute to body stiffness, as they are often bonded to the body. On the passenger side, in the event of deployment, the passenger airbag frequently relies on the windshield or front windshield, a load that modern windshields must also withstand.

In the case of a stone chip, windshields do not necessarily need to be replaced. There are now many auto glass repair shops that fill stone chips with highly transparent resin, which fills the damaged areas and then cures with UV light. However, a condition for this is that the size of the windshield damage does not exceed 3 cm in diameter, and neither dirt nor moisture has entered the damaged area. According to the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO), a stone chip in the "driver's line of sight" must not be repaired as the appearance cannot be restored to 100% after a repair.
