The Wheel Hub:

In general, a hub is referred to as a component that is slid onto an axle/shaft/axle stub. The hub is always a part of a connection with a shaft. Depending on the intended use, this hub can form a fixed connection with the axle—the hub rotates with the axle. If the rotation of the axle is accelerated, the rotation of the wheel hub accelerates accordingly. If the rotation is decelerated, the rotation of the wheel hub is correspondingly decelerated. The second way of using the wheel hub is that it is not connected to a rotating axle. It is slid over an axle stub and can rotate freely.

To ensure the smoothest possible rotation of the wheel hubs, they are supported by wheel bearings. To brake a vehicle, the rotation of the wheel hub must be decelerated. Since the rims/tires are also attached to the wheel hub, their rotation is also slowed down, causing the vehicle to decelerate.

Wheel hubs are constructed very robustly and can withstand any normal stress—stresses that occur in normal (even extreme) driving conditions. However, under "abnormal" stress, the wheel hub can also be damaged:

  • Severe external mechanical impact (accident)
  • Overheating, e.g., due to excessive brake wear (metal on metal)
  • Unresolved defect in the wheel bearing (overheating, impacts)
