Make your Fiat 500, Fiat 126 and Fiat 600 ready for spring! Cleaning If you roll your Fiat 500, Fiat 126 and Fiat 600 out of the garage for the first time, check for dust on windows, mirrors and paint and clean if necessary. If the Fiat has been driven in the winter, a slight salt layer could have formed that should be removed with a suitable brush. Also check whether there is any moisture under the floor mats or carpet and dry everything carefully. Take care choosing the right cleaning agents, because household detergent often contains hazardous substances for chrome coatings and plastic - and rubber parts and can also damage the paint. The convertible top cover should be cleaned by hand. Checking the fluid levels Next, you should check that the fluid levels are still adequate and replenish motor oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, coolant (if your vehicle is water-cooled) and water for cleaning the windscreen, if necessary. If there is any oil, residual liquid or wet spots under your Fiat on the garage floor, lines and hoses should be checked for leaks Tires and brakes Check for proper tire pressure, maybe a hose has lost some air. Also check the overall condition of the tires: Have they become porous? Are your tires too old? Sufficient tread depth for the season? Even more attention should be spent on the brakes. Check for rust on the brake drums or discs and also check the break hoses for leaks. If you are unsure about the condition of your brakes, a simple test-breaking on a private area can give clarity. Your life and the life of others depend on your brakes, so if there are any doubts, please see a professional garage. Battery and motor If your battery was disconnected the over the winter, you should clean and grease the terminals before connecting. In order to avoid short circuits, first connect the positive terminal, then the negative lead. After cleaning the spark plugs and connectors, you can try to start the engine. If you encounter any problems with the engine running after two or three attempts look for reasons and do some troubleshooting. If necessary, ask for help from an experienced friend or a classic car workshop, or have a look at "technology, tips and tricks" on Axel Gerstl homepage. The problem should be solved quickly; otherwise you will find all the parts you need to repair your Fiat 500, Fiat 126 and Fiat 600 in our webshop. There are a lot of special offers in our newsletter and in our online shop to help you to get your Fiat ready for the season, so have a look at it! |

First obstacles on the way to Dakar After a long preparation time, on February 25th it was time for Burkhard Hildebrandt to start of his tour Paris-Dakar, equipped with a second fuel tank and a solar cell on the roof to support the battery. The first few miles on the roads of Central Europe were a smooth ride and "Bea", Burkhard’s little yellow Fiat 500, was, as so often an eye-catcher. A meeting of a special kind had Burkhard then in France in the middle of the highway. Here he got discovered by our newsletter reader and Fiat 500 driver Thibault Lagardère, who happened to be on the way home and took the opportunity to wish good luck to Burkhard on his tour. The whole world is just a village ... Problems appeared in southern Spain. On Monday, 2nd of March, the company Axel Gerstl got an urgent emergency call, because Bea’s cooling fan had broken and Burkhard was waiting for a spare part on a campsite in Malaga. Of course, the Axel Gerstl team immediately started a parcel with two fans and some gaskets via Express Shipping to help Burkhard. Just thirty hours later, the fast delivery was a pleasant surprise for Burkhard. So after fixing the problem, the next miles to the ferry were no problem and so he went to Africa. But as life often goes, Burkhard ran into new troubles in Africa. Halfway through Morocco, he suddenly heard a loud noise which clearly came from "Bea's" engine and gave cause for concern. The first assumption quickly became certainty: The cylinder head melted from overheating and is completely useless! Therefore, "Bea" is now again sitting at a campsite near Chefchaouen, waiting for the next Axel Gerstl package, which is of course already on the way. Find out how the journey goes on with Burkhard Hildebrandt and his Fiat 500 "Bea", in the next issue of Axel Gerstl newsletter. |
