60 years Fiat 600!

Dear Customers, Fiat 500, Fiat 126 and Fiat 600 friends,

in February we have already celebrated the 50th birthday of the Fiat 500 F, and now there’s another anniversary: 60 years of Fiat 600. We reward the 600 with a detailed report.

Meanwhile, Burkhard Hildebrandt has finished the tour with his yellow Fiat 500 "Bea" and is back in Hameln. On his last stage he was faced with some technical problems. All about concluding Burkhard's "Journey of Hope" can be read here.

Of course, we also have the "Fiat of the month April" as well as many interesting offers and news around the Fiat 500, Fiat 126 and Fiat 600.

Have fun reading!,

Burkhard tour ends earlier than planned

After the mishap with his broken cylinder head, the Axel-Gerstl-Newsletter has also reported in its latest issue, Burkhard was stranded with "Bea", his yellow Fiat 500, at a campsite in Chefchaouen / Morocco. But Burkhard was very lucky, because unexpectedly he was visited by two Axel-Gerstl-Newsletter readers from France, which brought him a new cylinder head. The Axel-Gerstl-team would like to thank the two guys for this extraordinary help!

Fortunately Burkhard met a master car mechanic from Italy on the campground, who helped him to fix the old cylinder head. Therefore, the new cylinder head was kept as a spare - even if it should not be long before Burkhard was glad that he had it. Because after Burkhard had finally reached the dunes, the freshly repaired cylinder head was gone again. The installation of the new cylinder head, which had been dropped off by Burkhard his French visitors, was more difficult than initially thought, because the valves were not mounted, but separately packed in a bag. But bad luck and happiness are often close to each other and by sheer luck Burkhard ran into the Italian mechanic again, who had already helped him in Chefchaouen. They managed to produce an improvised abrasive paste with oil and Sahara Sand and succeeded to grind the valves.

On the way back from the dunes towards Spain the bad luck then went on: Again there were problems with the cylinder head and Burkhard had to go on only one cylinder for about 500 to 600 km. He patched the dead cylinder with a piece of wood to prevent exhaust gas from escaping. But that meant for Burkhard to stop every 50 kilometers along the roadside in order to replace the piece of wood that was turned into a lump of coal.

On the slopes of the Atlas Mountains "Bea" was finally so slow that Burkhard was even overtaken by cyclists. Some of them offered drugs through the open driver's window. Burkhard asked if they don’t worry about HIV, they just answered: "We do not inject - we smoke!"

Back at the campsite in Chefchaouen, Burkhard decided to call the ADAC (German Car Club) to help. Thanks to his ADAC Plus membership "Bea" was picked up with a trailer and will be transferred to Germany - Burkhard, however got a free flight toward home.

Despite all the beautiful experiences, Burkhard’s tour was of course overshadowed by the technical problems. But the fact that he could not realize his original goal, to visit hospitals, welfare centers and children's villages to educate people about HIV, frustrated Burkhard the most.

But he rated the feedback on various social media channels very positive, especially on Facebook. Because there, the story of his tour had become independent and led to a lot of attention to him and his goals. Whenever he arrived somewhere, he was welcomed with a lot of friendliness and helpfulness. "Bea" was treated as a star, was photographed at every opportunity and subject of numerous Internet postings.

The spare parts that Axel Gerstl had sent to Morocco, unfortunately, arrived late and are still waiting on camping Chefchaouen on their pick up. If, by accident, an Axel-Gerstl-newsletter reader is in this area in the near future, please contact Burkhard via his website www.reise-der-hoffnung.info and help returning the parts to Germany.

For the future, Burkhard for sure will draw his lessons from the experienced, but his journey enthusiasm cannot be tarnished by a broken engine. He is already playing with the idea for a tour around the Black Sea. Should someone have experiences or tips, Burkhard would appreciate a message via his website!

The Fiat 600 got 60 years old!

60 years Fiat 600

At the Geneva Motor Show in March 1955, a car was presented that is still unforgotten and enjoys many lovers and admirers all over the world: the Fiat 600, the "Seicento". As part of our newsletter we would like to remind you on the early years of this iconic car, which in the 1950s and 1960s founded the international fame of the Fiat brand, together with the Fiat Nuova 500. The two cars have a lot of similarities, not just visually.

Early after the 2nd World War, Dante Giacosa, designer and draftsman of innovative models such as the Fiat Topolino and of course the Fiat Nuova 500, has been commissioned by the Fiat managers to develop a vehicle for the old dream of a "car for the little man ". It should offer high performance at a low price for a broad mass of the population. Fiat felt strongly linked to the objectives of the economic policies of the newly formed Italian Republic: To promote the motorization of the country and to create progress and growth.

The Fiat 600 was the awaited result of a long process of market studies, which already started in the pre-war period, from strategic considerations and technical efforts. Especially the engine and the transmission caused some difficulties for the engineers for quite some time. In order to solve their own mental blocks and let the creativity come freely, Giacosa and his engineers were even locked up in a room during working hours just to get on any other thoughts. 1953 finally, the 633ccm engine with 23 hp and its top speed of 110 km / h was constructed and ready for series production.

Within a short time after its public presentation, the new Fiat 600 got a central driving force of the Fiat group and got so popular, that people hat to wait for up to one year to get one! It was mainly the low purchase price with an excellent price-performance ratio, low fuel consumption and a high level of comfort that made the 600 a winner. It was quite small, but offered enough space for four people and was thus able to establish itself as a family car.

Even outside Italy, the Fiat 600 was a great success. A lot of licensed derivartes were produced in various countries: The Seat Seat 600 or 770 (Spain), the Zastava 750 (Yugoslavia), the Fiat Neckar NSU Fiat Jagst (Germany version with fabric sunroof), the Austrian Steyr -Fiat 600, and so on. In total, nearly 5 million cars were built and caused bulging coffers in the Fiat company. It was not until the mid-1960s, when the sales figures went down due to the increasing popularity of the Fiat 500 and the new Fiat 850, and In 1969 the production of the Fiat 600 was stopped in Italy. In Spain it was continued as SEAT 600 until the end of 1973, and in Yugoslavia, the Zastava 850 with an 850cc engine was built even until 1985!

Congratulations on your success story, little Fiat 600!
