60 years of the Fiat 500 Dear Customers, dear friends of the Fiat 500, Fiat 126 and Fiat 600, A few days ago, the Fiat 500 celebrated its sixtieth anniversary. Here in this newsletter, we are taking a trip down memory lane with a look at the very first model of the Fiat 500 N: the beloved Nuova Cinquecento. Additionally, in this edition, Damien Thune will be coming to us from France as part of our ‘I drive a Fiat 126 because...’ promotion and explaining the reason he loves his Fiat 126. 60 years of Fiat 500 Nuova – 60 years of Dolce Vita! When it made its world début on 4 July 1957, very few people could have guessed what kind of impact The Fiat 500 Nuova, the successor to the much loved Fiat 500 Topolino, would have on the hearts of drivers in the years to come. It would become the first edition of the Fiat 500 to be considered a cult classic to this day. And of course it didn't take long for the ‘new kid on the block’ at Fiat to become a brand ambassador and a hero in the eyes of the Italians. On either side of the Alps and across the boot of Italy, drivers were reminded of the feelings of Dolce Vita: of lying in the sun on a beach, of the windy alleyways of the bustling Italian cities, of freedom, of simplicity and simply of their love for life. The little 500 has her chief designer, Dante Giacosa, to thank for all this. He was the one who gave her the ‘cheeky’ look that evokes these special feelings in drivers until this day. What's more, this car was his biggest achievement. In the end he built over 3.9 million units and it is estimated that around 600,000 of these can still be found on the streets of Italy alone (Source: Süddeutsche Zeitung). There is simply no denying the fact that the Fiat 500 has become a real crowd pleaser, and a car for the average man – better yet, a car for the man on a budget. She has taken pride of place in hundreds of thousands of family photos. Be it on holiday road trips, or as a guest at a wedding, or as a shoulder to cry in hard times. She is still an integral part of thousands of peoples' life story today. She is like a song that reminds you of a lover from long ago. I drive a Fiat 126 because... „“I have always dreamed of having a powerful car. So powerful, that the vibrations from the motor can be felt by passers-by. One where the smell of petrol reminds you of paddocks, and where precision is of the utmost importance. My Fiat was a dream come true, at 60km/hr I felt as if I was driving 130 km/hr, her motor left me buzzing. Not to mention her alluring perfume of petrol fumes. Moreover, if one isn’t pedantic and precise about the settings, than they won’t make it out of the garage. All in all, I wouldn’t trade my Fiat 126 for anything in the world!!!” ... and why do you drive a Fiat 126?
