| > 30 Years of Axel Gerstl: Once upon a time... |

30 Years of Axel Gerstl – a Little Journey through Time It was in 1988 – just 13 years after the production of the Fiat 500 had been discontinued – when Axel Gerstl founded his company in Eichenau, a suburb of Munich, about 600 kilometres away from the Fiat headquarters in Turin. At that time, the Fiat 500 was a so-called “modern classic”, and it was hard to get spares for it. Many owners of a Fiat 500 had to resort to odds from old stock or to used parts in order to keep their “little Italian” up and running. Another option was to use modified parts originally designed for its successor model, the Fiat 126, and muddle through anyhow. At that time, Axel transformed his small garage into a spares warehouse that, in the beginning, had only little room and accommodated mainly used parts. Quickly, he became renowned in the regional, later, nationwide Fiat 500 scene as a parts specialist. He visited motor shows and meetings, made contact to other Fiat 500 enthusiasts and searched for suitable producers of spare parts. Thus, the spares warehouse grew constantly and one day, the garage became too small. In 1994, Axel had to rent a former farm in Biburg, some kilometres from Eichenau (cf. Newsletter No. 155). This is where the company is still based today. Since then, things have changed considerably: The former one-man show has become an enterprise with more than 20 employees. In the beginning, the focus was on sending out catalogues and selling by phone, fax, and order forms, but as early as in 2000, Axel realised the potential of the Internet and established a successful, well-structured online shop. More storage space and offices were added to the spares warehouse in the barn of the former farm, so that it now has a total surface of more than 1,000 sqm. Two things, however, have remained the same over the years: the passion for the classic Fiat 500, its older brother, the Fiat 600, and its successor, the Fiat 126, as well as the desire to offer more than just a web shop dedicated to selling – an Internet site that provides its readers with insights into the world of the Fiat 500, Fiat 126 and Fiat 600 and delivers real added value thanks to the numerous free extra services it offers. Here, you find current market prices, repair and restoration tips, technical information, datasheets, countless images, stories, anecdotes (cf. Newsletter archives), and much more. Enthusiasm and real passion truly pay off – our worldwide customer base of more than 40,000 proves this in an impressive manner! |
