Not too long ago, the italian parliament discussed a bill, that caused quite a stir in public: according to this bill, cars with less than 1000 ccm cubic capacity and older than 25 years were to be excepted from the air-hygiene- clean-air-decree in the city centres. With this bill, the „Fiat-Cinquecento-Lobby“ in the italian parliament wishes to allow the Fiat 500 to return to the cityscape of the city centres, permitting Fiat 500 lovers to return to the historic scenarios. The idea behind this bill is the special meaning of the Fiat 500 in Italy, as the Cinquecento has a similar nostalgic value as does the VW Beetle in Germany: it is a cult automobile, an automobile icon, symbolic for economic miracle and mass mobility in the years of social, economic and political change after World War II. The initial, sceptical attitude towards the „automobile of the average man“ was quickly forgotten and the Fiat 500 turned out to be a money-spinner that managed to generate a feeling of attachment in it’s fans and drivers, due to it’s technical sturdiness and practical qualities. Even today, about a sixth of the 3.7 million cars produced between 1957 and 1975 are still on the road today despite restricting regulations and the missing catalytic converter. The recently introduced bill can be seen as a monumental preservation of the Fiat 500, and, despite the resistance of the italian green party, can be sure to receive a majority in the italian parliament.
