The Fiat 500: now officially recognised as piece of art! Fiat 500 drivers have known it ever since – now, even the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, one of the mostly frequently visited art museums in the world, has recognised: The Fiat 500 is a piece of art. Pure modern art – simply perfect. Since February 10, 2019, the Fiat 500 is at the heart of the new MoMA exhibition called “The Value of Good Design.” As early as in 1957, when the first Fiat 500 rolled off the assembly line, its elaborate design by Dante Giacosa not only excited Fiat enthusiasts, but also car lovers all over the world. It didn’t take long until the Fiat 500 was considered the archetype of Italian design, a timeless classic and, in its capacity as a brand representative, an Italian “national hero” that embodied the spirit of Italy and symbolised the “Dolce Vita” for people worldwide: living on the beach, under the sun and in the picturesque alleys of Italian towns – liberty, an easy-going lifestyle and pure lust for life. Since 2017, a historic Fiat 500 F from the top-selling and most popular Fiat 500 model line, is part of the permanent MoMA collection and will be on display until June 15. “The Value of Design” is an exhibition dedicated to the history of industrial design, presenting extraordinary items from the MoMA collection, including electric appliances, architectural ceramics, glass articles, furniture, means of transport, sport equipment, toys, etc. from the fifties and the sixties of the twentieth century. It aims at introducing the visitors to the realities of life in the after-war period where form had to bow to function. Functional design was then considered as a cornerstone for the reconstruction of economy and society and as a symbol for technical progress, especially after the lean years during World War II. The historic Fiat 500, dubbed the “car of the common man,” which pushed mass motorisation in the post-war years, perfectly reflects this evolution.
