The Scoiattolo - a rare Fiat 500/Fiat 126 derivate!

in today's newsletter we report about a real rarity - the Scoiattolo! 
An off-road vehicle which has been built by the company with the same name since 1966 with the engine and gear transmission of the Fiat 500.

Today we introduce you to the Scioattolo:

The brand Scoiattolo was founded in Riva del Garda and originated from the Carrozzeria Arrigo Perini (short: CAP) from Arco at Lake Garda, in which Arrigo Perini already built sporty Fiat 600 derivates in the early sixties.

1966 the first Scioattolo prototype was built by him, whereon this off-road vehicle based on the Fiat 500 was presented in the year of 1967. 1969 a four-wheeled Scoiattolo was introduced at the Turin Auto Show, which was named Super Scioattolo.

Until 1973 about 300 Scoiattoli and 50 Super Scoiattoli had been produced, before the company was sold to British Motor Company (BMC) because of financial trouble.

BMC carried on producing the Scoiattolo, but adopted some changes in the construction. They used the engine and gear transmission of the Fiat 126. From the Fiat 500 amongst others the wheel rims, bolt circle of rims and headlights remained. Furthermore the car body was built out of glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GRP), not out of iron sheets like before.

On the photos you can see a Scoiattolo Super 26 S (Year of construction: 1978), which has been in possession of company Axel Gerstl since 2002.

The characteristics of the Scoiattolo Super 26 S, from 1978 ,based on the Fiat 126 & Fiat 500:

• Independent wheel suspension and stabilisers
• McPherson struts
• Wheel disc brake in front 
• Manual traction control, by independent rear wheel hand brakes
• Engine and gear transmission of the Fiat 126 (Engine-type: 126 A 000; 589ccm)
• Underride barrier
• GRP-car body with included steel elements for stiffening
• Folding top, doors and belonging side windows demountable
• Front windshield stowable
• Imitation leather trim and carpet
