The Brake Pads / Brake Shoes
Brake pads are part of the braking system. The braking system has the task of reducing the speed of the vehicle or bringing it to a stop. The braking system in modern vehicles is one of the most heavily stressed safety systems.
Brake shoes are commonly referred to today as the brake pads for drum brakes, which are pressed from the inside against the drum. Strictly speaking, brake shoes consist of the curved metal carriers of the brake pads and the brake pads that make contact with the brake drum. Usually, the brake pads are glued to the metal carriers, but there are also riveted versions. The brake shoes are located inside the brake drum - arranged opposite each other in pairs. One brake drum is responsible for slowing down one wheel.
When the brake is applied, the brake shoes are pressed outward against the rotating brake drum by one or two wheel brake cylinders. This creates friction, and the vehicle is braked or prevented from rolling. Due to friction - the kinetic energy of the vehicle is converted into heat - the brake pads are "worn off" and become thinner. If the brake shoes were not replaced, their brake pads would eventually be completely worn off, and when braking, the carrier material of the brake shoe would be pressed against the brake drums. Since the carrier material of the brake pads is usually made of metal - just like the brake drums - metal would then rub against metal - which is destructive for the brake drums and also highly dangerous - a total brake failure cannot be ruled out.
Brake shoes should always be renewed axle-wise - always right and left simultaneously, as otherwise, there may be different braking effects on both sides, leading to undesirable (and uncontrollable) effects on the vehicle behavior during braking. Therefore, manufacturers usually only offer brake shoe sets that include two pairs of brake shoes.
Fresh brake pads reach their full braking performance only after a certain break-in period. During this break-in period, the surface of the brake pad adapts to the surface of the brake disc/brake drum. The so-called "friction carbon" forms at the contact surface of the brake pad during this phase - the material at the contact surface with the brake disc or brake drum changes under the influence of friction and heat, improving the braking effect.
