The Tie Rod End

The tie rod end is an important component of the steering knuckle steering system. The tie rod is responsible for transmitting the steering movement to the front wheels. The tie rod end is located at the end of the tie rod and acts as a connecting joint.

There are two different designs for tie rods: split tie rods, mainly used in passenger cars, where each wheel is articulated with its own tie rod. Trucks and tractors use a different design.

A tie rod consists of two tie rod ends (joints or ball joints) located at the ends of the tie rod. The connecting rod is a metal tube that can be equipped with one or two longitudinal threads, the length of which can be adjusted via a clamp retainer.

The tie rod end is part of the tie rod and, together with it, transmits the steering movement from the steering gear to the front wheels. The tie rod is mounted between the steering lever and the pivot point on the steering knuckle. Usually, two tie rods are present per steerable axle, and the steering lever is centrally located between them.

Normally, the lifespan of tie rod ends corresponds to the lifespan of the vehicle. However, excessive stress can lead to material fatigue and wear. If the tie rod ends are no longer in optimal condition, it results in significant play in the steering. If the vehicle cannot be steered properly, the tie rod ends should be replaced, and the vehicle alignment should be adjusted.
