The Brake Disc

The brake disc is part of a disc brake system. The brake disc is attached to the vehicle's axle, allowing it to rotate with the help of the wheel bearing. It rotates along with the wheel, is circular, and consists of the braking surface and the mounted axle attachment. The brake disc rotates between the brake pads, which are mounted on the brake caliper. During the braking process - when the driver presses the brake pedal - the brake pads are pressed against the braking surface of the brake disc, slowing down (i.e., braking) the rotational speed of the brake discs -> consequently the wheels -> consequently the speed of the vehicle.

Friction generates heat and wear, subjecting the braking surfaces of the brake disc to high mechanical and thermal loads. As the brake pads and the brake disc rub against each other during braking, these two parts of the brake system wear out simultaneously. However, the brake disc is designed to be harder than the brake pads, resulting in slower wear.

The lifespan of the brake disc is limited by the wear limit. The wear limit is the minimum thickness of the disc that can be ground off by the brake pads. Typically, the wear limit of a brake disc is 10% of the thickness of a new brake disc but must not exceed 2 mm.

Attention: If brake pads are driven beyond their wear limit, it also leads to premature wear of the brake disc - it develops grooves and furrows.

A brake disc should be replaced not individually but always in pairs/axially. Since the brake calipers with the brake pads are easily accessible when replacing the brake disc, it (almost) always makes sense to renew the brake pads at the same time.
